Greenland is not for sale, prime minister says after Trump renewed his demand to control the Arctic territory

Denmark’s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, reiterated that Greenland is not for sale after U.S. President Donald Trump again raised the idea that the United States should control the island for Arctic security and NATO defense.

Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, Frederiksen said Denmark is “ready to defend every inch of NATO including our own territory,” and urged allies to respect Greenland’s people’s right to self-determination. She added that Greenland’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected, and stated plainly: “Greenland is of course not for sale.”

Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland is strategically important for U.S. protection and for broader global security. He has also criticized allied support for Greenland and framed the issue as tied to NATO responsibilities.

The dispute highlights wider tensions in the Arctic as geopolitical competition increases, and it has also tested unity within NATO as Greenland is a semiautonomous part of Denmark.
