GlobalFoundries reaches agreement to establish U.S.-based supply of silicon interposers for advanced AI packaging”

On October 8, 2026, semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries announced a multiyear agreement with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, to manufacture silicon interposers in the United States. The agreement is valued at $2 billion and is intended to support TSMC’s advanced CoWoS packaging ecosystem. The manufacturing work will take place at GlobalFoundries’ facility in Malta, New York.

A silicon interposer is a specialized layer that helps connect multiple semiconductor components within an advanced package. In AI processors and high-performance computing systems, it can provide dense connections between computing chips and memory, helping data move between them. As chip designs become more complex, packaging technologies are increasingly important to overall system performance.

The agreement illustrates how the semiconductor industry is evolving beyond the familiar race to make ever-smaller transistors. Improvements in processing power remain significant, but combining different chips efficiently has become another major engineering challenge. Advanced packaging allows manufacturers to assemble multiple components into a coordinated system rather than relying entirely on a single piece of silicon.

Under the arrangement, GlobalFoundries will provide manufacturing services to TSMC and expand capacity at its New York site. The company says this will help establish a U.S.-based source of silicon interposers for advanced packaging, including designs incorporating embedded deep-trench capacitors. The additional capacity is intended to offer more flexibility as demand changes across different generations of computing products.

The production timeline, however, remains important. GlobalFoundries expects volume production to begin ramping up during the first half of 2028. That means the announcement represents a future supply-chain commitment rather than an immediate increase in finished products available to customers. Equipment preparation, process qualification, manufacturing yields, and coordination between the two companies will all matter as the project advances.

The partnership also reflects a wider effort among semiconductor companies to diversify where critical components are manufactured. A geographically broader supply chain may offer customers additional options, although it does not eliminate the complexity of sourcing materials, maintaining specialized equipment, and meeting strict manufacturing requirements. The agreement’s practical contribution will become clearer as production capacity is established.

For TSMC, the arrangement adds another U.S.-based manufacturing resource supporting its advanced packaging operations. For GlobalFoundries, it creates a role in a part of the semiconductor market closely tied to demand for AI and high-performance computing. Neither development removes the technical challenges of packaging increasingly complex processors, but both companies are positioning themselves to serve that need.

The story is a reminder that computing progress is built not only by designing faster chips, but also by improving the systems that connect them. The small layers between processors and memory rarely attract the same attention as a new AI model. Yet, as digital workloads expand, these components may help determine how reliably and efficiently the next generation of computing infrastructure can operate.
