Global warming will exceed limit, UN says in a report that maps path to get back below danger zone

A new UN Environment Programme report says the world will cross the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C warming threshold within the next few years. Even the most ambitious scenario sees temperatures peaking near 1.8°C around mid-century, before gradually cooling below the limit by century’s end. Achieving that path would require ending fossil-fuel use and developing carbon-removal technologies. During the overshoot period, the report warns of worsening extreme weather, food and water insecurity, rising seas, extinctions and potentially irreversible climate tipping points.
