KUSHVA, RUSSIA — A rare and violent tornado tore through Russia’s Ural Mountains region on Monday evening, June 22, 2026, leaving a trail of heavy destruction across Sverdlovsk Oblast and forcing local officials to declare a state of emergency. The industrial town of Kushva emerged as the epicenter of the disaster, where the high-velocity funnel cloud ripped directly through populated areas.

The extreme weather event shattered the typical summer calm, injuring at least 16 people and completely leveling or damaging nearly 100 homes.

According to Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry, the powerful twister formed between the settlements of Malaya Laya and Baranchinsky before plowing into Kushva at approximately 6:30 p.m. local time. Moving with unexpected ferocity, the storm smashed vital civil infrastructure and turned residential neighborhoods into landscapes of debris.

The tornado left a trail of structural ruin, entirely destroying at least 32 private homes—with some losing entire second floors to the vortex—and heavily damaging nearly 100 properties, including a local school and kindergarten. The twister also wrecked critical infrastructure by snapping concrete utility poles, uprooting trees, mangling vehicles, and rupturing gas and water lines, which forced emergency shutdowns to prevent secondary explosions.

These disruptions triggered widespread blackouts for roughly 4,000 residents after 15 primary power lines were severed, prompting emergency crews to work overnight deploying backup generators to keep the city hospital and children’s medical facilities fully operational.

The regional ambulance service reported that at least 16 individuals sought immediate medical attention following the storm. While the majority of victims were treated on-site for minor lacerations and trauma from flying debris, multiple injuries required more urgent care. Among those hospitalized was a resident transferred to nearby Nizhny Tagil suffering from a severely fractured forearm.

Municipal authorities quickly established temporary shelters to accommodate families whose homes were rendered uninhabitable. Emergency response teams have begun delivering drinking water and basic humanitarian supplies to the hardest-hit zones while full damage assessments continue. While severe storms are not unheard of in the region, a direct tornado strike on an urban center in the Urals is an exceedingly unusual event.

“This is certainly a rare event,” noted local meteorologist Alexei Pulin. “While tornadoes occur once every few years in the Sverdlovsk region, what makes this particular incident unique is that it passed directly through the city, caused extensive damage, and was witnessed by multiple residents.”
