Fuel Tanker And Van Collide Near Lagos, Fireball Erupts, Casualties Feared On Busy Highway

Lagos, Nigeria— A fuel tanker and a commercial transport van collided at high speed on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at 4:55 p.m. on October 30, 2026, triggering a fireball that engulfed both vehicles and spread to three following cars.

The crash happened at the Ogere stretch, a notorious black spot where the road narrows near a construction diversion. Witnesses said the tanker, loaded with 33,000 liters of petrol, was overtaking when the van in front braked for a pothole. The tanker struck the van from behind.

Fuel sprayed across the carriageway. Within seconds, the van caught. Passengers could not get out. The tanker jackknifed and its tank ruptured, sending burning fuel downhill.

“The van was full. People were shouting inside,” said Tunde Adebayo, a driver who stopped behind the wreck. “We tried to break windows. The fire was too fast.”

The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed nine dead at the scene, all from the van. Eight others were taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital with severe burns. The tanker driver survived with injuries and is under guard. Traffic was stopped in both directions for five hours.

Photos from the scene show the van reduced to a metal frame. The tanker’s cab melted. The road surface blistered. Vanguard Nigeria reported the tanker’s owner had been cited twice this year for defective brakes. The van operator had no valid speed limiter certificate.

“We recovered bodies that were burned beyond recognition,” said FRSC Sector Commander Florence Okpe. “Initial evidence points to excessive speed and loss of control. We will test the tanker’s braking system and review the tachograph.”

Fuel tanker crashes have killed more than 300 people in Nigeria this year. Enforcement of tanker safety rules remains weak. Many trucks run overloaded and at night to avoid checkpoints. The expressway diversion at Ogere has no lighting and poor signage.

Tonight the highway has reopened to one lane. The wreckage has been towed to Sagamu. Families are gathering at the hospital and mortuary to identify victims. Investigators are still mapping skid marks.
