“From London to Greenland: A Push for Global Conversations on Security and War”

During Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) in the UK House of Commons, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch pressed Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to lead urgent diplomatic discussions with NATO allies and directly with U.S. President Donald Trump on two major foreign policy fronts: the security of Greenland and the conflict in Ukraine.

Badenoch highlighted growing international uncertainty — particularly tension around Trump’s controversial rhetoric about Greenland’s status and the ongoing war in Ukraine — and argued it was time for the UK government to actively convene global partners rather than simply participating in existing NATO engagements.

Her intervention came against a backdrop of escalating tension over comments reportedly made by Trump suggesting the U.S. may consider options to assert influence over Greenland — an autonomous Danish territory and member of NATO’s Arctic flank. European leaders, including Sir Keir and Denmark’s Prime Minister, have publicly rejected any notion of Greenland being annexed or controlled outside Danish sovereignty and emphasised defence of territorial integrity within NATO’s framework.

Badenoch urged Starmer to convene an urgent meeting of NATO leaders to address this and similar strategic concerns head‑on, although the Prime Minister did not commit to such a meeting during the Commons exchange.

On Ukraine, Badenoch amplified calls for clearer UK leadership on future military commitments and diplomacy, pressing Starmer about plans for British troop deployment and clarifications on whether forces would engage in combat roles or what parliamentary oversight would apply. Starmer stressed that any deployment would be decided by MPs and aligned with NATO discussions but did not offer immediate details in the chamber.

Her stance reflects ongoing debates in Westminster about the UK’s role alongside allies — particularly the U.S. — in supporting Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion, and whether closer, direct engagement with Trump and NATO commanders is necessary to shape a coherent long‑term strategy.

The confrontation highlights broader political tensions in UK politics: the Conservative opposition is challenging Labour’s foreign policy leadership while urging a more assertive stance on transatlantic security and collective defence. Meanwhile, Starmer has been involved in international discussions with NATO and European partners, including reaffirming the alliance’s unity and joint security commitments.
