From Liquid Glass to AI Glasses — A Designer’s Journey Across Two Tech Worlds

I watched the shifting tides of Silicon Valley design long enough to know that sometimes, a single change can ripple across entire decades of interface and expectation. Today, that ripple comes from a name quietly familiar to millions of screens — a designer whose work shaped the soft glow of our phones, the intuitive swipes of our tablets, the subtle translucence of our watches. But that voice is leaving one house of design, and stepping into another.

For nearly two decades, Alan Dye has walked the taut line between technology and humanity. Hired by Apple back in 2006 as a creative director, he gradually rose to become the head of Human Interface Design — a role he took on officially in 2015. In that span, he helped craft the shapes, gestures, and atmospheres of some of Apple’s most defining products: the iPhone X and its gesture-driven clarity, the Apple Watch’s elegant interface, the bold redesigns of iOS, macOS, watchOS… and most recently, the interface for Apple’s Vision Pro headset and the “Liquid Glass” aesthetic that flows across iOS 26 and macOS 26.

But on December 31, 2025, Dye will begin a new chapter — not at Apple’s Cupertino campus, but at Meta’s Reality Labs. There, he will assume the title of Chief Design Officer, leading a new design studio that aims to blend hardware, software, and artificial intelligence into future-facing consumer products.

The significance of this move goes beyond a mere resume item. It signals a larger shift: design — once dominated by the era of polished smartphones and minimalist user-interfaces — is now at the frontier of an AI-infused hardware renaissance. Meta evidently sees more than code or chips; it sees design as a soil in which “intelligence” can be planted, grown, and shaped into new forms of human experience.

For Apple, this marks yet another moment of transition. Dye’s departure adds to a series of senior exits, reinforcing a sense that the company is reconfiguring its guardrails amid rising pressure around AI and future hardware. His replacement will be Steve Lemay — a veteran Apple designer who has worked on nearly every major interface Apple has shipped since 1999. CEO Tim Cook affirmed that the design philosophy will remain strong under Lemay’s stewardship.

What remains to be seen is not just whether Meta can match the polish of decades-old Apple craftsmanship — but whether this move can usher in a new design language entirely: one where AI, hardware, and human interaction are designed in concert, not in isolation. It’s a gamble that could reshape how we think of «device design» for the next generation.

In that sense, Dye’s journey becomes more than personal: it becomes symbolic of a larger migration — not just of talent, but of creative vision.

Now begins a quiet countdown to December 31, when the name behind many familiar swipes will start defining new ones in a very different ecosystem.
