From Group Home to Illinois Roadside: Geyser’s Escape and Its Echoes

In the chilly haze of a Midwestern morning, the story of Morgan Geyser takes yet another turn — one that feels less like a closing chapter and more like a fragile draft still being revised. Once confined behind the walls of a mental health institute, she slipped away over the weekend, cutting off the very bracelet meant to keep her tethered. Her escape and recapture in Illinois – alongside a long-time friend — has reignited difficult questions about redemption, supervision, and the hazards of freedom.

Geyser, now 23, had been living in a group home in Madison, Wisconsin, after a conditional release earlier in 2025. On Saturday evening, authorities say she removed her GPS monitoring bracelet, triggering an alert from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. By late night, the group home reported that she was gone and the device was missing.

Geyser was last seen around 8 p.m. with a 42-year-old companion, described by her as a “best friend.” Their journey carried them across state lines — apparently on a bus from Wisconsin to Illinois — until they were found sleeping on a sidewalk near a truck stop in Posen, roughly 170 miles from her Madison residence.

When police finally confronted her, Geyser initially refused to identify herself. According to officers, she said she didn’t want to share her name because she had “done something really bad” — before suggesting they could “just Google” her. The friend was charged with obstruction of identification for giving a false name.

This isn't Geyser's first brush with the law: in 2014, at age 12, she and another girl, Anissa Weier, lured a classmate into the woods and stabbed her 19 times. They claimed they did it to win favor with the fictional horror character Slender Man, a delusional story that haunted their youth and permeated their minds. Geyser pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree intentional homicide but was found not criminally responsible due to mental illness, and was committed to a psychiatric facility.

Earlier this year, a judge granted her a conditional release from the Winnebago Mental Health Institute, citing expert testimony that she had made “significant progress.” But her flight this weekend exposes how volatile that “progress” can feel — both for her and for communities still watching closely.

As of now, she’s in custody in Illinois. Authorities say she will face extradition back to Wisconsin. Meanwhile, her case continues to stir debate: how do we balance mental health rehabilitation with public safety, especially for someone involved in such a notorious and violent crime?
