Antofagasta, Chile— Two workers were killed after being struck by heavy machinery at an open-pit mine in Chile on October 16, 2026, and the site was sealed while inspectors traced the final movements of the equipment. The deaths happened on shift. They were immediate.
The National Geology and Mining Service, Sernageomin, said the accident occurred mid-morning in the northern mining zone. A haul truck reversed into a work area where two contractors were conducting ground marking. Both men were hit and trapped under the wheels. A third worker jumped clear.
A mine supervisor who was not authorized to speak publicly said radio communication had been spotty that morning. "There was dust. Visibility was low. The spotter was not in position," he said. That account is not yet in the official file. It is being checked.
El Mercurio reported that the mine is operated by a private copper producer with over 800 workers. The company issued a statement expressing regret and announcing a 48-hour operational halt. It said it will cooperate with Sernageomin and the Labor Directorate. Production stopped at noon.
Rescue teams arrived within minutes but could not save the workers. Paramedics declared both dead on the pit floor. The bodies were removed by crane after investigators photographed tire tracks and blind spots. The haul truck was impounded for inspection.
A Sernageomin inspector on site said, "We are reviewing safety protocols, training records, and whether the segregation of pedestrians and heavy equipment was respected. This is a grave accident." He said interviews with the driver and spotters would continue overnight.
Chile's open-pit mines account for most mining fatalities, often involving trucks and loaders. Union leaders have complained about subcontracting, long 12-hour shifts, and pressure to meet extraction quotas. Safety audits exist but enforcement varies by region and company.
The Labor Directorate said it will file charges if breaches are found. The families of the victims, both from Antofagasta Region, were notified. One was 34, the other 29. Both had worked as contractors for less than a year.
The mine will remain closed until a safety plan is approved. The trucks are parked. The pit is silent.
