From Buttons to the Wheel: A Fresh Way to Race in Mario Kart World

Racing games have always carried a simple promise: the thrill of motion, the rush of competition, and the illusion of gripping the wheel while speeding toward the finish line. For decades, game developers and accessory makers have searched for ways to make that illusion feel just a little more real.

Now, that search is taking another turn with a new accessory designed for Mario Kart World on the Nintendo Switch 2.

Accessory manufacturer Hori has announced officially licensed racing wheels themed around the popular kart racer. The new controllers are scheduled to launch March 23, 2026, offering players a steering-wheel style control system designed specifically for the game’s high-speed tracks.

Two versions of the accessory will be available: a Deluxe model and a smaller Mini version. The larger wheel measures about 11 inches, while the Mini version offers a more compact design aimed at casual players or younger gamers.

Both wheels include several features meant to enhance the racing experience. They come equipped with textured grips, programmable buttons, adjustable sensitivity settings, and built-in paddle controls. Foot pedals are also included, allowing players to accelerate and brake in a way that more closely resembles real driving.

Pricing reflects the difference in size and features. The Deluxe racing wheel is expected to retail for around $129.99, while the Mini version will cost roughly $79.99.

Although designed with Mario Kart World in mind, the accessories are not limited to that game alone. They are compatible with other racing titles on the platform, and they can also work with earlier Nintendo Switch systems, including the original and OLED models.

The arrival of these racing wheels reflects the continuing popularity of Mario Kart’s newest installment. Released in 2025 as a launch title for the Switch 2, Mario Kart World expanded the long-running series with open-world exploration elements and races supporting up to 24 players simultaneously.

For many players, accessories like steering wheels offer something simple but powerful: immersion. Instead of tilting a controller or pressing buttons, racers can physically turn the wheel, creating a closer connection between the player and the virtual road ahead.

With the new hardware arriving later this month, Switch 2 owners may soon find themselves gripping a steering wheel—not just a controller—as they drift through Mushroom Kingdom circuits once again.
