Fresh Violence in Manipur: 25 Houses Torched in Kangpokpi District

KANGPOKPI — Fresh violence erupted in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district as at least 25 additional houses were allegedly set ablaze by unidentified miscreants in Tiporam village on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The attack falls under the jurisdiction of the Chalwa police station, marking a severe escalation in local tensions following recent arson and sporadic gunfire along the Imphal–Tamenglong (IT) Road.

According to local reports and village sources, armed miscreants descended upon Tiporam village early in the morning. The perpetrators systematically targeted residential structures, setting them on fire before fleeing the scene. Among the structures destroyed were homes belonging to local residents, including members of the Nepali community, alongside granaries and vital household supplies.

Residents reported hearing heavy gunfire prior to the onset of the blazes. Displaced villagers, many of whom had only recently returned to the area after fleeing earlier skirmishes, were once again forced to flee for safety toward neighboring settlements.

The arson in Tiporam comes on the heels of repeated violence along the IT Road corridor. Just a day earlier, nearby settlements experienced similar attacks in which at least 10 homes were torched, vehicles were damaged, and a local pastor sustained severe bullet injuries.

The IT Road cuts through a sensitive region home to diverse ethnic communities, including Naga, Kuki-Zo, and Nepali populations. Local tribal bodies, including the Makui Village Authority, have strongly condemned the recurring attacks, alleging systematic attempts by armed groups to terrorize residents and force displacement.

State police and central security forces have dispatched reinforced detachments to the Chalwa area to stabilize the situation and prevent further retaliation. While security personnel have established checks and patrols along key transport routes, terrain challenges and remote geography have complicated rapid response efforts.

District authorities stated that an investigation into the arson and identification of the miscreants is currently underway. No group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack. High alert remains enforced across Kangpokpi as security forces attempt to restore calm.
