Fleeing the Watcher: A Woman’s Escape From Her Group-Home Exile

In the soft glow of a November evening, a shadow stretched beyond the walls of a small group home in Madison. That shadow belonged not to a mythical figure, but to Morgan Geyser, a woman whose youthful past remains haunted by the specter of Slender Man. On Saturday night, she slipped silently beyond the bounds of supervision, cutting away the electronic tether meant to keep her close.

Geyser, now 23, was taken into custody in Posen, Illinois, after fleeing the group home where she had been living under supervised release. According to police, she removed her GPS monitoring bracelet late Saturday, and staff reported her disappearance shortly thereafter. She was last seen around 8 p.m. in Madison, accompanied by an adult acquaintance, before being located at a truck stop in Illinois.

Her release earlier this year from the Winnebago Mental Health Institute marked a turning point. A judge granted her conditional freedom after experts testified she had made progress battling her psychotic illness. As part of the agreement, she was required to wear a monitoring bracelet — a fragile line between liberty and confinement. But on that November night, the line was severed.

The timeline that followed raised questions. The Department of Corrections received an alert around 9:30 p.m. that her bracelet was malfunctioning, but the Madison Police Department was not notified until the next morning. By then, Geyser was already more than a hundred miles away.

Geyser’s history is a turbulent one. In 2014, when she was 12, she and a friend lured their classmate into a wooded area and stabbed her 19 times — a horrifying act they later said was intended to appease Slender Man, a fictional internet character. Her victim survived. Geyser later pleaded guilty to attempted homicide, but was found not guilty by reason of mental illness and confined to a psychiatric hospital for decades.

Her attorney has publicly urged her to surrender peacefully. In a video message, he said this flight would only delay her progress and increase risk — for her and potentially others. For now, Geyser has been returned into custody, and authorities say there is no further search underway.

This incident reopens a difficult chapter — not just of a terrible crime, but of the fragile path of recovery and supervision. It underscores how tenuous freedom can be when balanced against public safety, and how past darkness may still cast long shadows into the future.
