Flash Flood Overwhelms Chocó Mining Camp 7 Illegal Miners Dead: Rescue Teams Search Mud

Quibdó, Colombia—Seven informal miners died Friday when a sudden flash flood rushed through a clandestine extraction camp in the remote tropical jungle of Chocó province. Heavy overnight rainfall caused a nearby jungle river to overflow its banks, trapping workers inside deep alluvial pits.

The disaster unfolded before dawn as a wall of muddy water tore through the riverbank excavation site, sweeping away makeshift wooden structures and heavy diesel pumps. Surviving workers scrambled up the steep jungle slopes, watching helplessly as the pit filled completely with silt and turbulent water.

Civil defense coordinator Mateo Gomez stated that local rescue volunteers recovered seven bodies from the submerged pit after pumping out water throughout the afternoon. Gomez explained that the victims were trapped underground with no means of escape as the torrent breached the earthworks.

Environmental prosecutors and specialized police units arrived at the isolated jungle clearing by helicopter to document the illegal mining operation. Investigators found abandoned excavation machinery, mercury containers, and fuel drums scattered across the heavily deforested river basin.

Labor ministry officials highlighted the constant dangers faced by informal workers operating illegal extraction sites in the lawless Pacific jungle region. Miners frequently work without basic safety equipment, flood barriers, or engineering oversight, leaving them entirely vulnerable to seasonal weather extremes.

Forensic coroner teams transported the recovered remains downriver by motorboat to the municipal morgue in Quibdó for formal identification and autopsy. Relatives gathered outside the coroner's office demanding information about family members who worked in the remote jungle pit.

Federal authorities announced plans to increase military interdiction operations against illegal mining syndicates fueling environmental destruction and informal labor exploitation. Environmental ministers emphasized that unmonitored riverbed excavations drastically increase flash flood risks for neighboring rural settlements.

Cleanup crews prepared to seal the remaining unstable pit openings with concrete blocks to prevent further unauthorized access by desperate prospectors. Police launched inquiries to identify the financial backers and operators controlling the clandestine jungle mining camp.
