Lyon, France— An industrial explosion ripped through a chemical facility near Lyon on November 1, 2026, injuring five workers and sending a plume of toxic smoke over the industrial corridor southeast of the city.
The blast happened at 10:40 a.m. at a plant that produces industrial solvents. Workers were conducting a transfer operation between storage tanks when a vapour cloud ignited. The explosion shattered windows in a control room and set fire to pipework.
Firefighters from the Rhône department deployed 60 personnel and chemical hazard teams. They found two workers with burns near the blast site. Three others had inhalation injuries and cuts. All five were taken to hospitals in Lyon. One is in serious condition.
"The explosion was followed by a fire that we had to cool before approaching. Our priority was to stop the chemical release and protect nearby installations," a fire service commander said at the gate. He said air monitoring showed no immediate danger to residential areas.
The facility is classified as Seveso high-threshold, meaning it holds large quantities of hazardous substances. It has faced inspections in recent years. A 2024 audit flagged maintenance delays on pressure valves. The operator said those issues were resolved.
Local authorities ordered a 500-meter safety perimeter. Workers in adjacent factories were told to shelter indoors for two hours. Traffic on the A46 motorway was briefly reduced to one lane as smoke drifted. Residents in Saint-Fons reported a strong chemical smell.
France's industrial safety agency, DREAL, sent inspectors to the site. The public prosecutor's office opened an investigation for involuntary injury and endangerment. Plant management said they are cooperating and have halted production on the affected line.
Union representatives said workers had warned about staffing levels on weekends. One union official said only three operators were on duty for a process that normally requires five. The company has not commented on that claim.
Environmental groups called for transparency on what chemicals burned. Officials said preliminary samples show mainly volatile organic compounds. Full analysis will take days. The fire was declared under control by 2 p.m.
The plant will remain shut until safety clearance is granted. Investigators will examine valve logs, camera footage and maintenance records.
