Five-team breakaway takes over Supercars charter negotiation.

There is a quiet tension that runs beneath the surface of any sport—a negotiation not of rules or results, but of money and power, played out in boardrooms far from the roar of the crowd. In Supercars, that tension has now spilled into open view, as a group of five teams has taken control of negotiations over the Teams Racing Charter, sidelining the four representatives who had been leading talks with the category's owner, RACE.

The breakaway group, whose members have not been publicly named, has reportedly taken over the negotiation from the four-man panel of Brett Ralph, Ryan Walkinshaw, Brad Jones, and Matt Stone. Speedcafe reported on Tuesday that the five teams—described as a "breakaway group"—have assumed control of the process, a significant shift in the balance of power as the sport approaches a critical deadline for its 2027 calendar .

The dispute centers on the Teams Racing Charter, the agreement that governs how RACE compensates teams for the costs of competing. Under the current structure, the charter mandates a base payment covering 12 events, with additional fees paid for each event beyond that. From 2027, those fees are set to increase dramatically—potentially to around $200,000 per additional event—making a calendar above 12 rounds financially unviable for RACE unless a new deal is struck .

Teams have been pushing for a higher base payment, understood to be seeking more than $1.2 million per year per charter, compared to the approximately $800,000 they received in 2026 . RACE has been reluctant to meet that figure, arguing that it needs to retain capacity to invest in the sport's growth. The five-team breakaway suggests that a significant portion of the grid believes the four-man panel has been too willing to compromise—or too secretive about the terms under discussion .

The complexity of the situation is compounded by the fact that any amendment to the charter requires a 75 percent supermajority among teams, while a complete rewrite requires unanimous agreement . The breakaway group's move could delay an agreement further, pushing the sport closer to the worst-case scenario that all parties have publicly said they want to avoid: a calendar shrinking back to 12 events.

Supercars is expected to announce its 2027 calendar around the Bathurst 1000 in October. Until the charter negotiations are resolved, that announcement cannot be finalised. For teams, the stakes are existential—the difference between financial stability and a season that costs more than it earns. For fans, the stakes are simpler: a season that is long enough to feel like a championship, or one that feels like an abbreviated version of what it could be.
