Aswan, Egypt— A highway bus crashed near Aswan early on November 1, 2026, killing five passengers and injuring twelve others, forcing authorities to shut the desert road for hours.
The bus was traveling north on the Aswan-Cairo highway when it veered off the asphalt and overturned. The driver lost control near kilometer 90. The vehicle rolled onto its side and slid into the sand shoulder. Windows shattered. Luggage scattered across the road.
Passersby called emergency services at around 6:30 a.m. Ambulances arrived from Aswan and Kom Ombo. Civil defense teams used cutting tools to free passengers pinned under seats. The injured were taken to Aswan University Hospital. Two are in intensive care.
The road is long and straight. It crosses open desert with little lighting. Drivers often push speed to make up time. Police said the bus was carrying 32 passengers, mostly workers and students heading to Edfu and Luxor.
"The bus swerved suddenly. Speed appears to be a factor," a traffic police officer at the scene said. "We collected brake marks and interviewed survivors."
Ahram Online reported the bus belongs to a private Upper Egypt transport company. Its license and inspection records are now under review. The company said the driver had passed a medical check last month. Relatives gathered at the hospital gate waiting for news.
Egypt has struggled with intercity bus crashes. Overloading, fatigue, and poor maintenance remain common causes. The Ministry of Transport said it would send a team to inspect the wreckage and review tachograph data.
The prosecutor in Aswan ordered an investigation. The driver survived and is under police guard at the hospital. Blood samples were taken. The wreck was towed to a police impound.
Traffic resumed by midday under police direction. Authorities kept a patrol on site.
