London, United Kingdom— One person died and two others were hospitalized after a residential apartment inferno trapped occupants inside a south London building on October 21, 2025.
The fire broke out at 11:47 p.m. on the fourth floor of a six-storey brick block. Neighbors heard smoke alarms, then shouting. Flames blew out of two windows and climbed to the flat above. The stairwell filled with thick black smoke within minutes.
Two adults and a child were inside the flat where the fire started. The hallway door was hot. The front door jammed. They retreated to the bedroom and called for help from the window. Below, people filmed and yelled to stay low.
London Fire Brigade sent four engines and a turntable ladder. Crews in breathing apparatus pushed into the building from the ground and from the roof. They found corridors zero visibility, heat 400 degrees near the door. One team reached the trapped family. Two were led out down the stairs. One was already unresponsive.
“We had a well-developed fire in a single flat that made the whole building untenable,” a station commander said at the scene. “Crews did a fantastic job getting people out, but conditions inside that flat were unsurvivable for one occupant.”
Paramedics treated two survivors on the pavement for smoke inhalation and burns. Both were taken to King’s College Hospital. One is in intensive care. Around 30 residents from other flats were evacuated to a nearby community hall for the night.
Investigators said the fire started in the living room, likely from an electrical fault in a sofa area. The flat had a smoke detector, but it had been removed from the hallway ceiling and found on a table, battery missing. The building had no external cladding issues.
The block remains cordoned off. Structural engineers will assess heat damage to concrete floors. Residents are not allowed back until clearance is given.
The death is not being treated as suspicious. A fire investigation report is expected within days. The building owner has been asked to provide fire risk assessment records.
