Finland Grants Licence for World’s First Nuclear Waste Repository

Finland granted Posiva an operating licence on October 22, 2026, for its encapsulation plant and deep geological repository at Olkiluoto. The Onkalo facility is designed to permanently store spent fuel from the country’s nuclear reactors, with capacity for up to 6,500 tonnes of uranium. The licence does not authorize immediate disposal. Posiva must complete commissioning tests and inspections, and Finland’s radiation safety authority, STUK, must verify readiness before operations begin. No start date has been announced. The site lies in southwestern Finland.
