Fiery Blaze Engulfs Mattress Factory in Jalandhar’s Basti Bawa Khel

JALANDHAR, Punjab — A massive fire erupted at a mattress manufacturing facility on Basti Peer Dad Road in the Basti Bawa Khel area of Jalandhar on Thursday morning, September 3, 2026. Towering flames and thick columns of dark smoke filled the sky, triggering widespread panic across nearby residential neighborhoods as emergency crews rushed to contain the chemical-fueled blaze.

The fire broke out around 9:00 AM while workers were inside the facility. Employees and local residents acted swiftly to launch initial evacuation efforts, successfully rescuing approximately 12 workers trapped inside before flames spread across the main structure. One worker sustained injuries after slipping during the rush to safety and was transported to a local hospital for medical care.

Fueled by highly combustible materials—including foam, cotton, synthetic fabrics, and industrial chemicals—the inferno spread within minutes. The Fire Department dispatched up to 10 fire tenders to battle the blaze from multiple angles using continuous high-volume water jets, while authorities evacuated adjacent homes as a precautionary measure.

Personnel from the Basti Bawa Khel police station arrived on-site to secure the area and control crowds as fire crews worked to prevent the flames from spreading into adjoining properties. Extensive property damage was reported, with raw materials, finished stock, machinery, and vehicles stored on the premises destroyed in the fire.

While an official cause has not yet been declared, preliminary findings suggest an electrical short circuit may have ignited the fire. A full investigation by local authorities and fire officials is underway.

The incident has raised fresh concerns among civic activist groups regarding safety standards and fire hazard compliance across mixed commercial-residential zones in Jalandhar. Local business associations noted that many older manufacturing units operate in densely populated corridors where narrow streets delay large emergency vehicles, prompting calls for mandatory safety audits and improved fire suppression installations in small-scale industrial operations.

District administration officials visited the scene following the containment of the blaze to evaluate structural safety and inspect adjacent homes for secondary heat or smoke damage. Municipal authorities confirmed that assistance will be made available to coordinate cleanup operations along Basti Peer Dad Road and assist surrounding households affected by power disruptions caused by burned overhead electrical lines.
