Fiery Blast on Bengaluru Sidewalk: Transformer Explosion Sparks Panic

BENGALURU, India — A high-voltage transformer installed on a public footpath exploded into flames in Bengaluru, triggering widespread panic among pedestrians and commuters during peak hours.

The violent blast, which shattered the routine along the busy street, sent thick black smoke into the air and showered live sparks across the pavement, forcing shopkeepers and passersby to scramble for safety.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang followed by a sudden burst of fire from the utility structure, which was mounted adjacent to a heavily foot-trafficked commercial zone. Nearby shop owners quickly downed their shutters while bystanders shouted warnings to keep approaching pedestrians away from the roaring blaze and dangling power lines.

Emergency personnel and fire tenders were dispatched to the scene immediately after receiving panic calls from local residents. Firefighters managed to douse the flames within 30 minutes, preventing the fire from spreading to neighboring retail outlets and residential buildings.

The incident has reignited long-standing concerns regarding the safety of electrical infrastructure mounted on pedestrian walkways across the city. Local residents and civic activists have frequently raised alarms over exposed wiring, poorly maintained transformers, and low-hanging cables that encroach onto public footpaths, posing severe safety hazards to daily commuters.

Authorities from the local electricity supply company arrived at the site shortly after the fire was extinguished to isolate the power line and inspect the destroyed equipment. Power supply to the surrounding neighborhood was temporarily suspended as engineers initiated repairs and launched an investigation into the precise cause of the failure, preliminarily suspecting an internal short circuit or electrical overload.

Following the public outcry, municipal officials and utility leaders announced an immediate safety audit of all roadside transformers across high-density commercial corridors. Civic activists have demanded that the utility provider expedite plans to convert hazardous overhead infrastructure into underground power lines, emphasizing that long-term safety upgrades are essential to protect pedestrians and prevent similar life-threatening incidents in the future.
