Fatal Violence in Manipur: 2 Killed, 2 Wounded in Kangpokpi Firing Incident

KANGPOKPI, MANIPUR — Fresh ethnic tensions erupted in Manipur's Kangpokpi district after suspected armed militants launched an attack on a local village, leaving two villagers dead and two others suffering from bullet wounds. Armed attackers launched an assault featuring heavy gunfire and arson in N Teikhang village under the T Waichong sub-division, driving terrified residents to seek safety in the surrounding forests.

The incident unfolded around 9:30 AM on Tuesday, September 01, 2026 when armed miscreants equipped with sophisticated weapons descended upon N Teikhang, an inhabited village in the hill district. According to district officials and local reports, the assailants opened fire indiscriminately on the villagers and torched multiple residential structures, triggering widespread panic across the area.

The attack claimed two lives at the scene, with the deceased identified as 35-year-old Lamtinthang and Neichin, both of whom succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds. Two others were injured during the gunfire, including Lamtinthang’s 65-year-old father, Seilun, who sustained a bullet wound to his thigh, and a woman named Nemneichong, who was also hit.

The violent outbreak marks a sharp escalation along the IT Road corridor—a strategically sensitive area that has seen a surge in security challenges, movement disruptions, and limited access to essential healthcare and commodities.

The attack comes on the heels of a series of violent incidents in the region, including an ambush just days prior on the IT Road between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga that left five people dead. Authorities are assessing whether the latest attack was a retaliatory strike, though no official connection between the incidents has been formally established.

Joint teams of state police and central security forces were immediately deployed to the T Waichong area to secure the perimeter, suppress further heavy exchanges of fire between rival groups, and restore order. Search operations are currently underway in the surrounding forest areas to locate displaced villagers and apprehend the perpetrators.

Police officials have stated that additional security checkpoints have been fortified along the IT Road corridor, with patrols intensified to prevent further violent flare-ups.
