Geneva, Switzerland— A dispute between two men at Geneva's main railway station ended in a fatal stabbing on the afternoon of October 20, 2026, leaving one victim dead and the assailant arrested on the platform by transport police.
The altercation began around 4:30 p.m. on Platform 5, where trains to Lausanne and Bern depart. According to Geneva cantonal police, the two men had argued loudly for several minutes, drawing attention from other passengers. The argument turned physical. One man drew a knife and stabbed the other multiple times.
The victim, a 31-year-old man residing in Geneva, collapsed near a bench. Railway staff called emergency services and attempted first aid. Paramedics arrived within six minutes but could not save him. He was pronounced dead at the station.
The attacker, a 28-year-old man, attempted to flee toward the main hall but was tackled by two transport police officers patrolling nearby. The knife, a folding blade, was recovered and taken as evidence.
"Our officers intervened immediately after hearing shouts. The suspect was overpowered without additional injuries," a Geneva police spokesperson said. "The station was not evacuated, but the platform was closed."
Trains were delayed for more than an hour as forensic teams worked. Passengers were rerouted through adjacent platforms. Many witnessed the aftermath and were offered psychological support by the SBB.
Investigators are reviewing station CCTV and interviewing witnesses. The prosecutor said the dispute appeared to have started over a seat and a bag blocking passage. No prior relationship between the men has been established.
The suspect is in custody and will be questioned by the prosecutor's office overnight. Charges of intentional homicide are expected.
The station returned to normal operations by early evening, though Platform 5 remained cordoned off.
