Tragedy in Pretoria West: 1 Dead as Fire Sweeps Through Salvokop Informal Settlement

PRETORIA, South Africa — One person has died and another has been hospitalized after a destructive fire swept through the Bagdad informal settlement in Salvokop, Pretoria West, during the early hours of Saturday morning, October 24, 2026.

The fire broke out unexpectedly before sunrise on Saturday, rapidly spreading across the tightly packed structures of the informal settlement. Driven by combustible building materials and close quarter living conditions, flames consumed more than 40 shacks within a short period.

Emergency services rushed to the scene following frantic calls from local residents. Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the blaze and prevent it from destroying neighboring properties.

During search and recovery operations amidst the charred remains, emergency personnel discovered one fatality. Another individual received emergency treatment for severe smoke inhalation before being transported to a nearby hospital for medical care.

The disaster has left scores of residents displaced, with many losing all their personal belongings, documents, and shelters in the blaze.

Key details of the incident report one confirmed fatality at the scene and another individual hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The destructive inferno completely destroyed over 40 informal shacks, leaving dozens of households displaced and homeless as disaster relief teams continue to assess the full impact.

Tshwane Emergency Services and local law enforcement authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the origin and root cause of the blaze.

Officials have urged residents and onlookers to stay clear of the affected zone to allow forensic teams, disaster response officials, and emergency crews to safely complete mop-up operations and clear hazardous debris. Humanitarian relief organizations and local community networks are currently mobilizing to provide emergency shelter, food, and clothing to the affected families.

As community members gather in temporary shelters, local leadership has issued an urgent plea for donations—specifically blankets, non-perishable foods, and building supplies—to help victims rebuild their lives in the coming weeks. Local government representatives have pledged to work closely with informal settlement committees to improve overall safety standards and prevent similar tragedies from striking the vulnerable area in the future.
