Fatal Mountain Corridor Crash: Bus Rollover In Mazandaran Province Kills Two And Injures Twelve

Sari, Iran—A passenger bus navigating a steep winding corridor through Mazandaran Province overturned today, killing two occupants and injuring twelve others. The intercity coach skidded across wet asphalt along a sharp descent, colliding with a protective concrete barrier before tumbling onto its side. Debris and luggage scattered across both lanes of the mountain transit route.

Emergency medical teams and Red Crescent rescue workers navigated hazardous road conditions to reach the remote crash site. Paramedics extracted trapped passengers from the crushed vehicle frame before transferring twelve injured individuals to regional hospitals in Sari and Amol. Medical staff confirmed three patients remain in critical care with severe orthopedic and internal trauma.

According to initial findings published by Mehr News Agency, mechanical brake failure or hydroplaning on slick mountain asphalt contributed directly to the driver losing control along the sharp curve. Traffic police officers noted the road section was slick from recent high-altitude rain showers.

"The bus started swaying violently on the downhill turn before hitting the guard wall and flipping," said a commercial truck driver who was following directly behind the coach. "The impact ripped off the roof structure completely."

Highway police shut down the mountain pass in both directions to allow heavy cranes and recovery vehicles to lift the wreckage off the thoroughfare. Road crews swept shattered glass, spilled engine fluids, and loose rock debris off the driving surface before reopening one lane under police escort.

The northern mountain passes connecting central Iran to Caspian coastal towns represent some of the country’s most hazardous transit routes. Frequent fog, rain, steep gradients, and heavy commercial traffic make sharp mountain curves recurring sites for major transit disasters.

Traffic police officers detained the bus driver for mandatory blood tests and formal questioning regarding vehicle maintenance logs. Transport authorities emphasized that strict mechanical inspections will be enforced for all intercity transport companies operating across northern mountain routes.

Recovery crews cleared the highway completely by late afternoon, enabling normal traffic flow to resume under cautious speed advisories.
