Fatal Landslide in Shan State: Five Killed as Mud and Debris Bury Rural Settlement Area

Taunggyi, Myanmar—A massive landslide buried several homes in Shan State on Wednesday, leaving five people dead. Relentless monsoon rains loosened the hillside, causing a torrent of mud and rock to crash into the village below. Local rescue teams reached the site within hours of the collapse.

The disaster struck just before midday when most residents were at home. Neighbors heard a sudden roar and saw the earth give way, moving toward the dwellings at the base of the slope. Villagers used basic equipment to dig through the debris before government aid arrived.

Emergency workers from the Regional Disaster Management office confirmed the death toll shortly after the site was secured. The terrain remains unstable, forcing rescuers to proceed with extreme caution. Two survivors with severe injuries were airlifted to the nearest provincial hospital.

Local officials have ordered the evacuation of the remaining households in the path of the slide. Soil saturation levels remain dangerously high, increasing the risk of secondary movements across the mountain range. Temporary shelters are being established in a nearby schoolhouse for displaced families.

The government is deploying geological survey teams to assess the structural risk of the entire hillside. Previous warning signs, including cracks in the soil, had been reported by village elders earlier in the week. However, the intensity of the rainfall appears to have accelerated the collapse.

Investigations into the disaster response and local land use are expected to follow. For now, the priority remains the recovery of any remaining missing persons and the distribution of emergency rations to the homeless.

The scene remains under control by regional authorities, though road access to the village is severely restricted by mud and fallen trees. No further casualties have been reported since the initial recovery effort.

Rescue teams will remain on site through the night to monitor the slope for any signs of further movement.
