Fatal head-on collision in Greater Accra, Sege-Ada highway crash leaves thirteen dead

Sege, Ghana—Thirteen people died and five others suffered critical injuries Wednesday afternoon following a violent head-on collision between two commercial passenger vehicles along the Sege-Ada highway in the Greater Accra Region. The crash involved a Ford Transit and a Toyota Hiace traveling in opposite directions along the two-lane road.

The impact reduced the front cabins of both vehicles to mangled metal, trapping passengers in their seats. Firefighters from the Sege Fire Station responded to the scene within minutes, using heavy rescue tools to cut through crushed metal doors and extricate the victims.

A total of 18 passengers were involved in the high-speed impact. First responders confirmed that 13 victims succumbed to their injuries before they could be removed from the wreckage.

Five survivors sustained severe multi-system trauma and were rushed to the Sege Polyclinic by emergency medical teams. Doctors at the facility stabilized the injured while preparing several critical patients for transfer to specialized trauma centers in Accra.

Traffic along the Sege-Ada corridor came to a complete halt as police officers cordoned off the crash zone to preserve physical evidence. Debris, glass, and automotive fluids covered both lanes of the road, forcing long lines of commercial vehicles and private cars to detour through nearby unpaved access tracks.

The Ghana National Fire Service confirmed that emergency personnel spent over two hours clearing the wreckage and managing the casualties on the asphalt. Public relations officers expressed condolences to the bereaved families while urging motorists to exercise heightened caution on inter-city highways.

Preliminary reports suggest one of the commercial minibuses attempted an unsafe overtaking maneuver at high speed before colliding directly with the oncoming vehicle. Police accident investigators are analyzing tire skid marks and vehicle positions to establish the exact sequence of events.

Family members of the victims gathered outside the local mortuary and polyclinic seeking news as police officers began the process of victim identification.

Tow trucks eventually removed the destroyed minibuses from the highway late in the evening. Road safety crews swept the remaining glass and oil from the lane surfaces, allowing normal traffic flow to resume along the Sege-Ada route.
