Mount Edgecombe, South Africa— A two-vehicle crash on Hillhead Drive killed one person and injured several others just after 6:30 a.m. on October 30, 2026, closing a key access road north of Durban.
The collision involved a sedan and a minibus taxi. Both were traveling on Hillhead Drive near the R102 intersection. Police said the sedan crossed the center line and struck the taxi head-on. The impact spun both vehicles into the shoulder.
The driver of the sedan died at the scene. Paramedics from private emergency services declared him dead after assessing his injuries. Taxi occupants were thrown inside the vehicle. At least six passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.
"The taxi was full of workers heading to Cornubia," a traffic officer at the scene said. "The car came from the opposite side. Speed may be a factor."
KwaZulu-Natal private ambulance crews and fire teams worked to free one passenger trapped in the taxi. Hydraulic tools were used. The road was covered in fuel and broken glass. Tow trucks were called to remove both vehicles.
Hillhead Drive was closed for more than three hours. Morning traffic backed up toward Mount Edgecombe and Phoenix. Metro police diverted vehicles through the industrial area. Commuters were advised to use the N2.
Witnesses told officers the sedan had been overtaking another vehicle before the crash. That claim has not been confirmed. Police said they would review dashcam footage and check for skid marks.
The taxi driver survived with moderate injuries. He was taken to a private hospital. Passengers were taken to three different hospitals depending on the severity of their injuries. No children were on board.
Arrive Alive reported the crash early morning, noting heavy delays. Authorities urged drivers to avoid the area.
Investigators said a case of culpable homicide was opened. The road reopened shortly before 10 a.m. The deceased had not been formally identified late Thursday.
