NEW DELHI — A devastating building collapse in northeast Delhi’s Harsh Vihar area on Sunday evening, October 25, 2026, resulted in the tragic deaths of two residents after concrete slabs caved in during ongoing construction work.
The victims were identified as 60-year-old Chanderpal and his 33-year-old son, Vijay Kumar, both residents of Gali No. 14 in Harsh Vihar. The father-son duo, who had taken on the construction contract for the site, was trapped under tons of concrete and metal framework when the structure suddenly gave way at Milan Garden.
According to preliminary inspection reports, the disaster occurred while workers were attempting to cast a new concrete slab to add an additional floor above an existing structure.
Eyewitnesses and investigators noted that the aging ground-floor roof was structurally weak and failed to support the load of the newly poured concrete above. The lower slab buckled, causing both levels to collapse simultaneously in a chain reaction.
"A concrete slab was being cast for the building. The existing lower slab was weak, and a new one was being laid on top of it," explained a local resident. "As a result, the lower slab gave way, causing the entire new slab above it to collapse."
Emergency calls alerted authorities shortly after the incident on Sunday evening. Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, and Civil Defense teams rushed to the site, launching an extensive overnight rescue operation using heavy earth-moving equipment to clear concrete fragments.
Both victims were pulled from the rubble during the overnight search and immediately rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Delhi Cabinet Ministers visited the collapse site overnight to assess the rescue work and oversee administrative support for affected families.
Delhi Police have traced the building owner and initiated legal proceedings under relevant statutory provisions to determine whether building code violations, lack of safety permits, or structural negligence contributed to the collapse. The incident has renewed public concern over unauthorized vertical expansion and structural safety standards across aging urban neighborhoods in the national capital region.
