Edmonton, Canada— Multiple people were killed after a severe industrial accident at a western military installation triggered a massive structural fire that burned through a maintenance complex.
The accident occurred in the late morning inside a workshop area where heavy equipment and fuel stores are kept. Workers reported a loud blast, then smoke poured from the building. Alarms sounded across the base and non-essential personnel were ordered to shelter.
Base fire services arrived first, followed by municipal units. Flames spread quickly through the structure, fed by stored materials. Black smoke was visible for several kilometers. Explosions were heard as pressurized containers failed.
The Department of National Defence confirmed fatalities but did not release a number pending next-of-kin notification. Sources on site described at least three dead and several injured, some with burns. A triage area was set up outside the perimeter.
"This is an active incident with casualties," a base spokesperson said. "We have secured the area. Our focus is on fire control and accounting for all personnel." He said an investigation team will be formed once the site is safe to enter.
The installation was placed on lockdown. Roads leading to the complex were closed and air operations were paused as a precaution. Military police established an outer cordon to keep traffic clear for emergency vehicles.
Firefighters used foam and water to contain the blaze from two sides. The building's roof collapsed early, which made interior attack impossible. Crews switched to defensive positions and worked to protect adjacent fuel and munitions storage.
Workers who escaped described chaotic moments. One civilian contractor said he was in a neighboring bay when the floor shook. He ran toward an emergency exit as lights failed and sprinklers activated.
Investigators will need to examine equipment logs, maintenance records, and witness accounts. Industrial safety officers from both the military and federal labour programs were notified.
The fire was still burning in pockets by late afternoon, with crews expecting to remain on site through the night.
