TRAPPES, France — A gunman opened fire across multiple locations in the western suburbs of Paris on Friday, October 23, 2026 killing one person and injuring five others—including a 12-year-old girl—in what French authorities and local officials suspect was a targeted, racist attack.
France’s National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) has launched a formal terror investigation into the rampage, which lasted under 15 minutes before anti-crime officers brought the suspect into custody.
According to investigators and eyewitness accounts, the assailant drove a grey sedan through several neighborhoods, targeting pedestrians at three separate locations across Trappes and neighboring La Verrière. The suspect fired indiscriminately into public areas, including near a playground and a gas station.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed that three of the five surviving victims remain in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. Emergency medical teams treated the wounded at the scenes before rushing them to regional trauma centers.
The suspect was intercepted and apprehended by officers from the anti-crime brigade in the nearby municipality of Coignières. Footage from the arrest showed the suspect's vehicle riddled with bullet holes.
Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh condemned the spree as an attempted mass killing motivated by Islamophobic hatred. "It was objectively a racist attack, probably Islamophobic," Rabeh told reporters, noting that the gunman appeared to deliberately target visible minorities and passersby in the heavily diverse community.
Prosecutors revealed that the probe covers charges including murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise and possession of category-A military-grade weaponry capable of automatic fire. Security has been heightened across the Paris region as federal authorities work to establish the gunman's motives and determine whether he acted alone or was affiliated with extremist networks.
In response to the tragedy, local community leaders and religious organizations gathered Friday evening to hold vigil for the victims while calling for peaceful solidarity. Municipal services have opened crisis counselling units for residents and witnesses shaken by the violence, while regional police patrols have been deployed around places of worship, schools, and civic centers across the district.
