EU Countries Give Final Approval to Russian Gas Ban

The European Union achieved a significant milestone on January 26, 2026, by granting final approval to halt all Russian gas imports by the end of 2027. This historic decision will see the phasing out of both liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports by late 2026 and pipeline gas by September 30, 2027. The ban marks a legally binding commitment to sever ties with Russia, the EU's previously leading gas supplier.

The decision was endorsed by ministers from 25 EU member states during a meeting in Brussels, although both Slovakia and Hungary voted against the ban, with Hungary indicating intentions to challenge the law in the European Court of Justice. The opposition stems from both nations' heavy reliance on Russian energy.

The agreement allows for some flexibility, permitting an extension of the deadline to November 1, 2027, if any member state experiences difficulties in securing sufficient alternative gas supplies before winter.

Historically, Russia supplied more than 40% of the EU’s gas prior to 2022, a figure that has plummeted to around 13% as of 2025 due to the ongoing sanctions and the shift in energy sourcing practices within the EU. Under the new law, companies will be prohibited from signing new contracts for Russian gas and must terminate existing agreements. Violators of the ban could face penalties, including fines up to 3.5% of their annual global turnover.

This regulation not only reflects the EU's response to the security threats posed by the invasion of Ukraine but also aims to pave the way for a more diversified and resilient energy market going forward.
