KNYSNA — Tragedy has struck South Africa's police force after a high-ranking detective assigned to probe the political assassination of former Knysna mayor Aubrey Tsengwa was killed in a bloody gun battle.
The 50-year-old police captain, a member of the elite provincial Tactical Response Team (TRT), was shot dead during an early-morning tactical operation at the Sewende Laan informal settlement on Uniondale Road. A 38-year-old suspect was also killed in the exchange of gunfire, with police recovering two illegal firearms at the scene.
The captain had been deployed to the Western Cape coastal town following a wave of targeted violence that has rocked local leadership. Beyond investigating the fatal ambush of former Mayor Tsengwa, the officer was actively probing the murders of local ANC figures Mandla Matiwane and Mandla Tyololo.
The targeted nature of the killings has sparked public fears of escalating political violence and factional warfare in the municipality.
The tragic death of the officer comes as law enforcement continues to press charges in the ongoing murder probes. Three individuals have already appeared in the Knysna Magistrate's Court on charges of conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Tsengwa's death, and they remain in custody pending a formal bail application. Meanwhile, specialist multi-agency teams remain deployed to Knysna to track down additional suspects and investigate potential operational ties between the three killings.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi expressed deep condolences to the officer's family, confirming that SAPS has deployed psychosocial support teams to assist the officer's traumatized colleagues.
In the wake of the fallen officer's death, community leaders and civil rights groups have renewed their calls for urgent national intervention to quell the rising tide of political violence in the region. Local authorities are urging residents to remain calm and come forward with any information that could assist law enforcement, stressing that the police force will not be intimidated from continuing its fight against organized crime and political violence in Knysna.
