Espionage Alarm in Poland: Russian National Detained After Secretly Photographing Critical Rail Infrastructure

ŚWIDNICA, Poland — Polish law enforcement authorities have detained a 55-year-old Russian citizen on suspicion of acting on behalf of a foreign intelligence agency after he was caught covertly photographing trains and key railway infrastructure in southern Poland.

The arrest took place in the town of Świdnica, located in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, during a routine security operation conducted by local police forces.

According to police reports, officers patrolling near an unguarded railway crossing spotted a Volkswagen automobile stationary in a suspicious area. Upon noticing approaching officers, the driver quickly reversed and sped away from the location.

Police units tracked the vehicle to a nearby railway viaduct, where the suspect was standing alongside the parked car. When confronted by officers, the individual displayed visible nervousness and attempted to flee on foot before being swiftly subdued and taken into custody.

A forensic examination of the digital devices and high-capacity storage drives found in the suspect's possession uncovered extensive photographic evidence, including hundreds of thousands of detailed images depicting transport hubs, railway lines, viaducts, and critical industrial installations across Poland and multiple foreign jurisdictions. Additionally, law enforcement officers seized several distinct identity documents carrying different names and credentials.

Initial checks established that the individual had formally entered Poland under the guise of employment, though counter-intelligence services suspect his primary operational objective involved conducting visual reconnaissance on vital logistics corridors.

The suspect has been formally charged with performing acts of espionage on behalf of a foreign intelligence service. Following a preliminary court hearing, a judge ordered the individual to be remanded in custody for three months while state security services continue their investigation.

Polish security officials emphasized that the detailed intelligence gathered by the suspect poses a direct threat to state security, particularly given Poland’s strategic role as a primary transit hub for international military and logistical supplies to neighboring Ukraine. Counter-intelligence agencies have further escalated surveillance protocols across key transport routes following the incident.
