Ekhaya Mall Highway Disaster: Head-On Car Collision Kills Three People And Injures One

Secunda, South Africa—A devastating head-on collision between two light passenger vehicles near Ekhaya Mall today claimed the lives of three individuals and left another in critical condition. The high-speed impact crushed the front engine bays of both sedans, leaving crumpled wreckage strewn across both lanes of the road.

Local emergency medical services, municipal fire brigades, and traffic officers arrived rapidly at the crash site. First responders used heavy hydraulic rescue tools to cut open crushed vehicle doors and access the occupants inside. Paramedics declared three passengers dead on the scene due to severe traumatic injuries.

Emergency medical personnel stabilized the sole survivor at the scene before rushing them to a nearby hospital for emergency surgical intervention. Medical staff listed the patient in critical condition with severe internal injuries and multiple fractures.

According to preliminary accident reports cited by the Ridge Times, one of the vehicles attempted a high-speed overtaking maneuver along a solid barrier line, crossing directly into oncoming traffic. The approaching driver was unable to swerve or brake in time to avoid the collision.

"The force of the crash sounded like an explosion," said an eyewitness who pulled off the road nearby. "Both cars rebounded off each other and blocked the entire width of the roadway."

Police forensic collision investigators closed the road section in both directions for several hours to map the crash trajectory, examine skid marks, and collect debris samples. Heavy towing vehicles were deployed to clear the crushed vehicle frames and clear spilled oil from the asphalt.

The corridor surrounding Ekhaya Mall experiences heavy daily traffic volumes, with community members frequently raising concerns regarding high vehicle speeds and risky overtaking maneuvers near commercial access intersections.

Local police opened a formal culpable homicide docket to investigate the circumstances leading up to the fatal crash.

Traffic officers fully reopened the road late in the afternoon after maintenance crews washed down the pavement and cleared all remaining debris.
