Echoes Beneath the Waves: Titanic’s Pocket Watch Fetches Millions

In the stillness of a grief-laden legacy, time paused at 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912 — the exact moment when the Titanic slipped below the waves. A pocket watch, found later with the body of first-class passenger Isidor Straus, has been sold at auction for £1.78 million, setting a new high-water mark for relics tied to that fateful voyage.

Straus, a prominent businessman and co-owner of Macy’s, famously perished alongside his wife Ida, who refused a lifeboat seat without him. His 18-carat Jules Jürgensen watch, engraved with his initials and stopped exactly when the ship went down, is a quiet but powerful testament to their story.

The auction took place at Henry Aldridge & Son in Wiltshire. The timepiece had remained in the family for generations before being offered for sale, and its restored movement had been carefully preserved.

This sale eclipses the previous record for Titanic memorabilia — just months earlier, a gold pocket watch recovered from John Jacob Astor IV, the wealthiest passenger on the ship, had sold for about £1.175 million. Astor’s watch, often engraved with his initials, had already carried both personal and historical weight; but Straus’s brings a different resonance: a love, a tragedy, and a frozen moment in time.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge reflected on the smoking-gun appeal of such artifacts: they are not just objects, but stories — each with its own emotional current. For collectors, the provenance matters deeply; for historians, the watch underscores the human dimension of one of the world’s most famous maritime disasters.

Beyond monetary value, this sale illustrates how Titanic memorabilia continues to captivate. More than a century later, people are still willing to pay handsomely for physical traces of that night: not merely for the story, but for a connection to real lives, dreams, and final moments.
