Fatal Highway Pileup: Stationary Freight Lorry Triggers Crash Killing Three Passengers Near Ibadan

Ibadan, Nigeria—A broken-down freight lorry stranded along an unlit stretch of expressway near Ibadan triggered a violent multi-vehicle pileup today, leaving three motorists dead and several others pinned inside crushed wreckage. The heavy truck suffered complete mechanical breakdown during early morning hours, coming to a dead stop in a high-speed lane without warning flares, reflective cones, or functioning hazard lights.

Approaching vehicles traveling at high speeds failed to spot the stationary obstacle in the darkness. A commercial passenger bus slammed directly into the rear of the unlit lorry, initiating a chain-reaction collision that involved two private cars and a secondary delivery truck. The severe force of the successive impacts telescoped the smaller passenger vehicles beneath the heavy rear axle of the commercial freight trailer.

Federal Road Safety Corps personnel and local emergency responders rushed to the scene with heavy hydraulic extrication equipment to cut through crushed steel frames. Rescue crews worked for hours to release several trapped survivors suffering from severe limb fractures, internal bleeding, and crush trauma. Paramedics confirmed three individuals inside the initial passenger car died on impact.

Ambulances transported six critically injured survivors to the University College Hospital in Ibadan, where trauma units were placed on immediate alert. "The complete absence of advance warning reflectors or hazard markers on a stranded heavy vehicle created an unavoidable trap for incoming traffic," stated Commander Joshua Adebayo of the Federal Road Safety Corps. "The speed differential made driver avoidance maneuvers virtually impossible."

Unlit breakdowns along major Nigerian interstate routes constitute an ongoing, lethal hazard across commercial transportation networks. Freight operators frequently abandon broken-down vehicles directly in active travel lanes without setting up reflective triangles or alerting highway patrols. Combined with poor highway illumination, high night-driving speeds, and delayed towing responses, these abandoned trucks routinely trigger high-fatality pileups across major corridors.

Highway patrol officers halted all northbound traffic along the expressway, redirecting commercial freight onto secondary arterial roads while heavy recovery cranes lifted crushed vehicle chassis off the asphalt. Frustrated motorists stood along the road shoulder as emergency workers swept shattered glass, spilled engine oil, and metal debris off the highway lanes.

Forensic units completed crash site measurements and victim identification procedures before releasing the deceased to the mortuary late this afternoon. Police officers took the freight lorry driver into custody after locating him hiding in nearby vegetation along the highway embankment.

Hospital spokespersons reported that three of the six admitted survivors remain in critical condition in intensive care units. Towing teams cleared the last twisted wreckage frame off the roadway late in the afternoon, allowing highway patrol units to reopen one lane to passing traffic.

The expressway sector remains under strict police traffic monitoring as road crews spread sand over oil slicks. Transport authorities confirmed a formal criminal inquiry into the haulage company's maintenance records and safety protocols is underway.
