New Delhi, India— A DTC bus plowed into parked vehicles and pedestrians in Anand Parbat on Friday, killing one person and injuring two others, police said.
The crash occurred during afternoon traffic in central Delhi. The bus was on its regular route when it veered off course. It struck a row of vehicles before hitting people on the roadside.
One pedestrian died on the spot. Two others were rushed to a nearby hospital with fractures and head injuries. Police cordoned off the stretch and halted bus movement.
“The bus lost control and hit several vehicles and pedestrians,” a senior Delhi Police officer said. “We have detained the driver and the bus has been seized for mechanical inspection.”
Witnesses told police the bus was moving fast before the impact. Shopkeepers in Anand Parbat said they heard a loud crash and ran out to find people trapped under debris. Local residents helped lift the bus to free the injured.
DTC officials said they have ordered an internal inquiry. The focus is on brake failure and driver error. The transport department will examine maintenance logs for the bus.
The accident triggered a traffic jam that lasted for hours. Police diverted vehicles through side lanes in Rajinder Nagar and Patel Nagar. Commuters were asked to avoid the Anand Parbat crossing.
DTC buses have faced repeated scrutiny over maintenance and driver training in Delhi. Last year the corporation said it would install speed governors and retrain drivers. Unions say pressure to keep schedules leads to risks.
The injured are under treatment at RML Hospital. The body of the deceased was sent for post-mortem. Police said a case has been registered and further action will follow the mechanical report.
