Rotterdam Morning Tragedy: Three Young Lives Lost in House Fire, Building Safety Under Review

Rotterdam, Netherlands— A house fire that erupted shortly after 5:10 a.m. on October 18 in Rotterdam's Delfshaven neighborhood killed three children inside a brick row house and left their parents hospitalized.

The fire started on the ground floor and moved fast. Neighbors called emergency services after hearing smoke alarms and shouting. By the time the first engine arrived at 5:18 a.m., flames were already coming from the front windows.

Firefighters forced entry but were pushed back by intense heat. The interior staircase had collapsed. Crews entered from the rear and from an upper window via ladder. They found two children in an upstairs bedroom. A third was in the hallway.

"We knew children were inside. That changes everything," a Rotterdam-Rijnmond Safety Region officer said at the scene. "The smoke was thick, the house was fully involved. We did everything we could."

The parents, both in their 30s, escaped through a back door with severe burns and smoke inhalation. They were taken to Erasmus MC. Their condition was described as serious but stable. Officials have not released the children's ages, but local reports said all were under 12.

The house is part of a dense terrace built in the 1930s. Timber floors. Old wiring. No sprinkler. Investigators are examining whether a space heater or electrical fault sparked the blaze. Forensic teams remained inside through the afternoon, sifting ash.

Neighbors stood in the street in blankets. One man said he tried to kick the front door but the heat drove him back. Another said the mother screamed for her children from the pavement. The street was sealed with police tape.

Rotterdam Mayor Carola Schouten visited the scene and spoke briefly with family liaison officers. The municipality has opened a support center at a nearby community hall. School officials were notified.

The cause remains undetermined. Investigators expect to release preliminary findings within 48 hours.
