“Driving in the Mist: The Fed’s Uncertain Road When Inflation Data Vanishes”

“Driving in the Mist: The Fed’s Uncertain Road When Inflation Data Vanishes”

A prolonged federal government shutdown has slowed or suspended key releases from agencies such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). The result: The central bank is operating on partial maps—private-sector data and internal surveys—rather than the full spectrum of official statistics. For example, the monthly inflation report (the Consumer Price Index) slated for October was delayed; field surveys couldn’t be conducted during the shutdown. Similarly, the September jobs data that would ordinarily inform decisions around employment trends have been postponed. Why does this matter so much? The Fed adjusts interest-rate policy based on how inflation is evolving and how the labour market is performing. With inflation still above its 2 % target and employment showing signs of softening, the absence of reliable fresh data clouds judgment. In remarks cited by news agencies, Fed officials likened this moment to driving in the fog—where one cannot speed blindly because visibility is poor. In practical terms, the Fed may defer deeper rate cuts or take a more measured pace. If policy is too aggressive without full information, there’s a risk of mistiming: cutting rates when inflation could rebound, or holding rates too long and risking growth faltering. The shutdown-induced data vacuum raises those risks. For markets, businesses and households, the uncertainty can ripple: investment decisions, hiring plans, wage negotiations—all depend in part on how the economy is measured to be performing. Moreover, while some private-sector “nowcasts” and alternative data sources exist, they are regarded as less robust than the government surveys. Missing raw data means less granularity, less historical comparability, and greater margin for error. So the metaphor holds: the Federal Reserve driver slows down, scans the horizon more often, listens for feedback, minimizes surprises—and waits for clearer skies. But the mist lingers, and so the journey proceeds with extra caution.
