Diyala, Iraq—Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service units launched a pre-dawn tactical raid on an insurgent hideout in rural Diyala Province today, leaving one gunman dead and two security officers wounded. Assault teams surrounded an isolated agricultural compound following precise intelligence pointing to an active militant cell. Gunfire erupted immediately as troops moved to breach the primary structure.
Tactical medical units treated the injured officers on scene before airlifting them to a military hospital in nearby Baqubah. Military surgeons reported both officers sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and remain in stable condition.
According to a statement issued by the Iraqi Security Media Cell, the deceased suspect opened fire with automatic weapons when assault teams called for a peaceful surrender. Security forces returned targeted fire, neutralizing the suspect inside an fortified basement bunker. Operators seized automatic rifles, explosive belts, and tactical communications equipment from the site.
"The target compound was heavily fortified with reinforced doorways and concealed firing positions," said a senior officer attached to the operation who was not authorized to speak on the record. "Our operators took incoming fire the moment they crossed the outer perimeter gate."
Military engineers swept the surrounding orchards and outbuildings for booby traps and secondary explosive devices. Ordnance disposal teams executed a controlled detonation of improvised explosive components found stored inside the facility.
The raid forms part of an intensified security campaign aimed at dismantling remnant insurgent cells operating across dense palm groves along the Diyala River basin. The rugged terrain and rural agricultural pockets have historically served as transit points and staging zones for militant operations.
Provincial security leaders confirmed that intelligence gathered during the compound search is already being processed to trace secondary support networks in surrounding villages. Operations across the sector remain ongoing as forces track additional suspected insurgent contacts.
Joint security checkpoints across northern Diyala remain on heightened alert, with armored vehicles inspecting civilian vehicles entering key transport corridors.
