KwaMashu M25 Traffic Incident: Multi-Vehicle Collision Leaves Multiple Occupants Injured In Durban

Durban, South Africa—A multi-vehicle collision along the busy M25 highway near KwaMashu today left multiple occupants injured and caused heavy traffic congestion across the northern Durban transit corridor. The impact crushed the front compartments of two light motor vehicles, leaving debris scattered across both lanes of the roadway.

Metro police officers, municipal fire services, and private paramedic units responded immediately to the dispatch call. Rescue personnel deployed hydraulic jaws of life to cut through twisted door pillars and free trapped passengers from the wreckage. Paramedics stabilized the injured victims on scene before transferring them to regional hospitals in Durban.

Attending medical staff confirmed that several casualties suffered severe orthopedic fractures, chest trauma, and deep lacerations, with two patients listed in critical condition. Paramedics managed the scene under heavy rain conditions that made the road surface slick.

According to accident details published by Arrive Alive, the collision occurred when one vehicle lost traction on wet pavement while navigating a high-speed bend along the M25 route. The sliding car spun across the center line, impacting an oncoming passenger vehicle head-on before coming to rest against a metal barrier.

"The grey sedan lost control on the wet curve and crossed straight into incoming traffic," said a commuter who was traveling a short distance behind the crash. "There was a loud crash and both cars bounced into the guardrail."

Metro traffic officers closed off the eastbound lanes of the M25 highway, directing heavy traffic onto secondary township routes. Towing operators deployed heavy flatbed trucks to lift the crushed vehicles and clear broken mechanical components from the asphalt.

The M25 corridor connects densely populated residential townships like KwaMashu and Inanda to commercial hubs in Durban, making it a high-density artery prone to severe collisions during rain events. Local motorists have long advocated for enhanced drainage installations and continuous speed monitoring along the route.

South African Police Service officers opened an official investigation to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the impact.

Highway maintenance personnel cleared fluid spills from the road surface, enabling traffic officers to fully reopen the M25 lanes by late afternoon.
