Desert Highway Tragedy: Head-On Bus and Truck Crash Leaves 14 Dead Near Hurghada Egypt

Hurghada, Egypt—Fourteen people died Saturday morning in a catastrophic head-on collision between a long-distance passenger bus and a heavy cargo lorry on the desert highway connecting Cairo to the Red Sea resort city of Hurghada.

The commuter bus was carrying holidaymakers and local workers when it collided directly with a speeding flatbed truck during an attempted overtaking maneuver in low-visibility morning light. The violent impact completely crushed the front cabins of both vehicles, scattering debris across the asphalt.

Egyptian ambulance authority dispatches sent more than a dozen emergency vehicles to the remote desert stretch. Paramedics confirmed that 14 occupants, including both drivers and multiple passengers, suffered fatal traumatic injuries and died at the scene.

Rescue personnel transported more than 20 surviving passengers suffering from severe fractures and internal trauma to Hurghada General Hospital. Provincial security forces cordoned off the highway section, causing temporary traffic gridlock for tourists and commercial transport operators.

Transport ministry engineers and traffic prosecutors arrived at the site to inspect brake marks and vehicle remains. Preliminary investigations point toward excessive speed and driver fatigue as primary factors in the deadly crash.

Governorate officials announced immediate financial assistance packages for the families of the deceased victims. Heavy-duty tow trucks cleared the mangled wreckage from the lanes by late afternoon, allowing normal traffic flow to resume under heightened police patrols.
