Naples, Italy— Two men were killed in a mafia-style execution in broad daylight on a public street in Naples on October 20, after gunmen opened fire in front of witnesses and fled on a scooter.
The shooting happened at around 2 p.m. in the Forcella district, a dense neighborhood in the historic center known as a Camorra stronghold. The two victims, aged 38 and 42, were standing outside a bar when a scooter carrying two men approached. The passenger got off, walked up, and fired multiple shots at close range. Both men fell. The shooter got back on the scooter and disappeared through narrow alleys.
Police said the killings bear hallmarks of a Camorra hit. The method - broad daylight, public street, close-range shots to the head - is a classic intimidation tactic. The victims were known to police for extortion and drug offenses, according to preliminary checks. One had been released from prison six months ago. Investigators believe the murders are linked to a feud between rival clans over control of drug trafficking and protection rackets in the area.
Witnesses said they heard six to eight shots. People ran. Shop owners pulled down shutters. A woman who was buying bread said she saw the gunmen calmly leave. "They did not hurry. They knew no one would stop them," she said. Carabinieri and state police cordoned off the street. Forensic teams recovered casings from a 9mm pistol.
Naples has seen a resurgence of Camorra violence this year. After a period of relative calm, clashes between the Mazzarella and Contini clans have left more than a dozen dead since January. The Forcella district is at the center of the dispute. Anti-mafia prosecutors said the area is strategically important because it connects the port to the city's drug markets.
The mayor of Naples said the city will not be intimidated. The interior ministry announced it will send additional police and anti-mafia investigators to Naples. Residents said they are afraid. One shopkeeper said he pays protection money every month. "If you don't pay, they burn your shop. If you pay one clan, the other comes," he said.
The bodies were taken to the forensic institute for autopsy. Police are reviewing CCTV from the area, though many cameras in Forcella are broken or covered. No arrests have been made. Investigators said they expect to make arrests within days.
The street remains cordoned off. The bar where the victims were standing is closed.
