Amarillo, United States— The sky turned brown, then white. On Tuesday morning a fast-moving cold front slammed into the Texas Panhandle with early frost and 60-mph winds that lifted topsoil into a wall. Drivers on US-84 had no time.
The National Weather Service had issued a wind advisory and blowing dust warning at 5:14 a.m. Visibility dropped to near zero within minutes. Ice formed on the overpass north of Lubbock where the temperature fell 18 degrees in an hour. Then metal hit metal.
State troopers counted at least 20 vehicles tangled across both lanes. Pickups, semis, a livestock trailer. One jackknifed across the median. The chain reaction took 90 seconds. The 911 calls took longer.
"It was dust, then ice, then brake lights," said a driver pulled from his SUV with a broken shoulder. "You couldn't see the hood. You just heard it coming." He was lucky. Others stayed trapped for an hour.
Lubbock County emergency management closed the highway. Fire crews worked with thermal cameras through the dust cloud. The Department of Public Safety said several people were taken to University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The exact number is still being sorted.
This corridor is notorious. Flat fields, loose soil after harvest, no windbreak. When a Canadian front dives early, it meets warm ground. Dust plus flash frost equals slick clay on asphalt. The state knows. Little has changed.
Truckers interviewed at the detour said the state's variable speed signs never dropped below 75. The NWS warning did not trigger an automatic reduction. The Department of Transportation said it is reviewing signage timing.
Forecasters said the front will clear by Wednesday but another gusty system is lining up for the weekend. The soil is still loose. The ice will return.
Tonight the wreckers are still pulling rigs from the ditch. The highway remains shut. Troopers are measuring skid marks in the dark.
