Hillside Collapse Crushes Home in Vietnam: Continuous Rain Triggers Landslide That Injures Three Family Members

Hanoi, Vietnam— The hill behind the house had been drinking rain for a week. On Tuesday it let go. A slab of saturated soil slid 30 meters, hit a single-story residential block in a northern commune, and folded it. Three people inside were hurt.

The Vietnam Disaster Management Authority said the slide struck at around 6:30 a.m. in Yen Bai Province, where continuous rain had logged over 200 millimeters in three days. The house sat below a cut slope cleared for farming. No retaining wall. Just earth.

Neighbors heard a low rumble, then a crack. The back wall collapsed inward. Roof sheets and timber came down on a kitchen where a family was making breakfast. Rescue took 40 minutes with hands and shovels.

"The mud was like wet cement," a local militia member said. "We dug until we found their legs." Two adults and a teenager were pulled out alive. They were taken to the district hospital with fractures and lacerations.

Officials in the province said 12 other houses in the same hamlet were flagged as high risk and evacuated. The commune road was blocked by debris two meters deep. Excavators were still en route at noon because access is narrow.

Northern Vietnam faces this every October. Steep terrain, thin soils, relentless monsoon troughs. Houses built on old slide scars because flat land is scarce. Warnings exist. Enforcement does not.

The national weather center said more rain is forecast as a tropical trough lingers over the Red River Delta. Soil moisture in Yen Bai is at full saturation. Local authorities ordered night watches on slopes.

The provincial People's Committee said it will provide temporary housing and rice support for the affected families. That aid rarely covers reconstruction.

Tonight the house is a pile of mud and rebar. The three injured are stable. The hill above still drips.
