SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — A fatal midnight collision on the Lodge Freeway near 9 Mile Road left at least one person dead and forced emergency crews to close the highway during the overnight hours.
Emergency responders and Michigan State Police troopers rushed to the scene shortly around midnight after reports came in of a severe crash along the northbound lanes of M-10 (the Lodge Freeway) near 9 Mile Road.
When first responders arrived, they discovered heavy vehicle damage scattered across the roadway. Medical personnel confirmed at least one fatality at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased pending positive identification and family notification.
State police immediately closed down the affected stretch of the Lodge Freeway to clear debris and conduct a crash reconstruction investigation. Officers redirected traffic off at nearby exits while investigators worked through the night to determine what factors led to the collision.
It remains unclear how many vehicles were involved or whether speed, weather conditions, or driver impairment played a role in the crash.
The closure created significant delays for late-night commuters and early morning travelers as crews worked to secure the scene and haul away the wreckage. Roadway cleanup crews remained on site for several hours to ensure all debris and hazardous fluids were cleared before reopening the lanes to normal traffic flow.
Local traffic authorities advised drivers heading through Southfield to seek alternate routes, such as Telegraph Road or I-696, while the investigation continued. Michigan State Police urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant dash cam footage to contact the MSP Metro Detroit Post.
Community leaders and road safety advocates frequently point to this stretch of M-10 as a area requiring extra caution, particularly during late-night hours when visibility is reduced and traffic speeds tend to increase. Officials remind all motorists to stay vigilant, maintain safe following distances, and report any hazardous driving behavior immediately.
