Bogota, Colombia— Five people were killed when a passenger minibus plunged off a mountain cliff in Cundinamarca on October 16, 2026, and rescuers had to descend ropes to reach the wreckage. The road is narrow. The drop is steep. The bus did not stop.
The Cundinamarca transit authority said the vehicle was operating a municipal route when it missed a curve on the road connecting Fusagasugá and Silvania. It broke through a low concrete barrier and fell approximately 80 meters into a ravine. The front cabin was crushed.
Bomberos Cundinamarca reported four dead at the bottom and one dead during extraction. Seven others were injured, three critically. Survivors were hoisted on stretchers up the slope. One man walked out with a broken arm. The driver is among the dead.
Passengers who survived said the brakes made a noise before the curve. One said, "We were going fast. The driver pumped the brakes. Then we went over." That account is not yet verified. Mechanical failure and excess speed are both on the table.
El Tiempo reported that the minibus belonged to a cooperative that serves mountain villages. Locals complained the same curve has seen three prior incidents. Guardrails are short. Fog is frequent. Maintenance inspections are supposed to be monthly but often slip.
A spokesman for the Departmental Risk Management Unit said, "Access is difficult. We deployed 22 rescuers, a drone, and two ambulances. The terrain complicates extraction." He said the operation took more than three hours due to loose rock.
The road was closed while a crane lifted the chassis. Families arrived from nearby farms. They waited behind tape. A priest was called. No manifest was available, so authorities relied on survivors to count who was aboard.
Colombia's mountain transport fatalities have risen this year, with overloaded minibuses and aging fleets operating on underfunded roads. Oversight is divided between municipalities and the national superintendency. Gaps persist.
The Attorney General's Office will inspect the company's maintenance shop and review brake records. The injured were taken to hospitals in Fusagasugá and Bogotá. The cliff remains unguarded.
