Coastal Yemen Tragedy: Landmine Explosion In Hodeidah Province Kills Two Children Playing Near Farmland

Hodeidah, Yemen—A buried landmine detonated near agricultural land in Hodeidah Province today, killing two young children who were playing near the edge of a family farm. The explosion scattered soil and shrapnel across the open field, killing both victims instantly. Family members and local villagers rushed to the site after hearing the loud blast echo across the agrarian landscape.

Local authorities and medical responders retrieved the bodies from the unmapped minefield sector. The United Nations Mission to Support the Hodeidah Agreement confirmed the fatal incident, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by unexploded ordnance embedded across coastal Yemen.

The tragedy highlights the persistent hazard faced by rural communities along Yemen’s western coast, where years of conflict left thousands of anti-personnel and anti-vehicle mines concealed beneath shifting sand and soil. Rainstorms and seasonal agricultural tilling frequently displace buried devices, bringing them closer to active footpaths and farming plots.

"The children were walking along a dirt pathway near the irrigation canal when the device triggered," said a local farmer who assisted emergency responders at the scene. "These fields are full of hidden explosives that no one has mapped or cleared."

Demining teams from local civil defense units cordoned off the immediate pasture to search for additional buried explosive devices. Demining technicians using metal detectors swept the surrounding footpaths to secure the corridor for agricultural workers and local families.

International humanitarian agencies continue to warn that explosive remnants of war represent a leading cause of child casualties across Hodeidah Governorate. Clearance operations remain severely underfunded and hampered by a lack of specialized detection machinery and detailed minefield maps.

Community leaders in rural Hodeidah called for immediate international assistance to accelerate mine-clearing operations around schools, residential hamlets, and agricultural water points. However, ongoing security friction and logistics obstacles continue to slow humanitarian demining sweeps across the province.

UN monitors and local safety technicians remained in the village late into the afternoon, conducting risk education sessions and marking hazardous zones with red stone boundaries.
