Firefox Is Adding a Switch to Turn AI Features Off In a move that highlights growing awareness of user preferences around artificial intelligence, Mozilla is adding a dedicated control in its Firefox browser that lets people completely disable AI‑powered features. This new setting — sometimes described as an AI “kill switch” — will arrive in Firefox 148, rolling out on February 24, 2026 to desktop users.
The forthcoming “AI controls” section in Firefox’s settings will include a single toggle labeled Block AI enhancements that lets users turn off all AI features at once — including both existing and future generative AI elements. Alternatively, users can manage individual features separately if they want some but not others.
At launch, the AI controls will cover features such as automatic webpage translations, AI‑generated alt text in PDFs, AI‑enhanced tab grouping and link previews, and a sidebar chatbot (with options like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Claude). Turning on the master switch inhibits these tools and suppresses pop‑ups or reminders about new AI enhancements.
Mozilla says this change is designed to give users full autonomy over how — or if — generative AI interacts with their browsing experience, reflecting feedback from people who either prefer a more traditional internet experience or simply want fewer AI‑powered interventions. The browser’s AI preferences will persist across future updates once set.
This approach distinguishes Firefox from other modern browsers where AI features are often integrated deeply and may be harder to opt out of entirely — instead giving people a clear choice about how technology serves them.
