Taiwan Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim made a rare visit to Italy to attend the Ventotene European Conference for Freedom and Democracy. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung accompanied her, according to Taiwan’s Presidential Office. China condemned the visit and lodged protests with Italy and the European Union, accusing Taipei of using the event to create international space for Taiwan. Conference organizers rejected Beijing’s objections, saying no country could dictate whom Europe hosts. The trip highlights Taiwan’s efforts to strengthen unofficial ties abroad.
